Lucky Dog Animal Rescue Adoption Event

Catharine Matthews ’05 has been a volunteer with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue for nearly three years. Lucky Dog rescues dogs from high-kill shelters in Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Two of the shelters euthanize dogs on Friday allowing each dog only a five day opportunity to be rescued. One of these shelters is located inside the county penitentiary which allows little chance for the dogs being adopted.

To date, Catharine has fostered more than 60 Lucky Dogs and has helped them find their “furrever” home.

The Washington, D.C. Chapter will volunteer for National Month of Service at Lucky Dog’s April adoption event at PetSmart in Falls Church. Volunteers will receive a brief orientation beginning promptly at 11:30 a.m. and will be assigned to handle fostered dogs, fill water bowls and represent Lucky Dog to potential adopters. Children have to be at least 12 years old to volunteer with a parent, and 18 years old to handle a dog on their own.

Miriam’s Kitchen

Ashley Lawson ’07 has worked at Miriam’s Kitchen for nearly six years planning events, managing individual and corporate fundraising, and directing their volunteer program. She also moonlights as a writing instructor for their poetry program for homeless guests! Miriam’s Kitchen provides healthy, homemade meals and essential social services to more than 4,000 homeless men and women each year. Their volunteer base has grown to more than 2,000 volunteers who work on a regular basis to serve guests.

The Washington, D.C. Chapter will volunteer for National Month of Service for a breakfast shift to prepare and serve a healthy, homemade breakfast for 150 homeless men and women. Volunteering is fun, upbeat, and is a great way to get involved with the D.C. community while learning cooking skills.

Closed-toe shoes, long pants and a T-shirt or long-sleeve shirt are required. For your safety, sandals, shorts, skirts, dresses and tank tops are not allowed. If you’re working in the kitchen, you’ll need to have something covering your head. Feel free to bring a hat of your own. For safety reasons, children under the age of 21 are not allowed to volunteer at Miriam’s Kitchen.

The co-ed softball season is comprised of 14 games that are played from April – July. Ten games are played weeknights at the base of the Washington Monument with two double-header weekends. The season concludes in August with a tournament in Greenbelt, MD. There will be a fee for this league (to be determined). Please complete the entire Softball Interest Form by February 1.

Elon’s Washington, D.C. Alumni Chapter 7v7 co-ed soccer team are the Defending Champions! Soccer is an eight game season played on Sunday afternoons from April – June. A tournament in played in late June (weather permitting). Field locations are still to be determined, but last season games were played in Alexandria, VA. There will be a fee for this league (to be determined). Please complete the Soccer Interest Form by February 1.

Thirteen alumni spent a Wednesday evening earlier this month at D.C. Central Kitchen, which prepares more than 5,000 meals per day and distributes them to homeless shelters, transitional homes and nonprofit organizations. Chapter members took part in the tedious work of de-boning salmon and venison, baking cobbler, and making breakfast sandwiches.

The spirit of the giving season continued on December 13, which marked a new event that brought together ten North Carolina alumni chapters. Elon was joined by more than 350 alumni from Appalachian State University, Davidson College, Duke University, Guilford College, Meredith College, N.C. State University, UNC-Asheville, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte and Wake Forest University for a fundraiser and silent auction to benefit Toys for Tots. More than 200 hundred toys and donations were collected at the event by the U.S. Marine Corps. An extra U-Haul trailer had to be brought in to transport the toys.

“After the success of this evening, we look forward to participating again,” said Jennifer Heilman ’07, chapter president.  “Not only did our alumni give back to a worthy organization, but it provided a great networking opportunity. We hope we can plan similar events within the North Carolina alumni network throughout the year.”

Perhaps one of the most gratifying volunteer opportunities, 24 alumni along with several family and friends participated in Wreaths Across America’s annual laying of wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery on December 15 as part of the Capital Alumni Network. More than 20,000 volunteers laid approximately 110,000 wreaths.

“Having the experience of being at Arlington National Cemetery provides a powerful and unique perspective for all our volunteers. We look forward to making this an annual tradition to honor our veterans,” said Nick Palatiello ’06, chapter representative for the Capital Alumni Network.

Many alumni who were unable to participate in the event donated wreaths to the cause.

We want you to nominate a service project to help a cause that matters most to you! Nominations will be accepted January 7 – February 8. Then we’ll let our local alumni vote online February 11 – 22 for one to two service projects to be completed during April’s Rise Up and Serve National Month of Service.

A few guidelines before you get started on your nomination:

• The organization must be able to prove 501(c)(3) status.
• The service project must be able to be completed in April 2013 on a weekday evening after normal working hours, or on a weekend.
• Service projects could be a school supply or canned food drive at our monthly social, a neighborhood spring clean-up day, making care packages, providing working hands for a building project, or serving at a shelter. The options are endless. You tell us how your organization needs us to help most!
• We will not sponsor an organization with a monetary donation and service projects should not require a registration fee for volunteers.

The Winery at Bull Run is adjacent to the historic Manassas National Battlefield Park. The winery also offers you a glimpse of winemaking techniques from the Civil War era, historical buildings and artifacts (including a small museum housing Civil War relics and antique winemaking equipment).

A private group wine tasting in the cellar (or on the patio as weather permits) will begin at 12 p.m. and includes 9 wines: 4 red, 4 white and a port wine, as well as a souvenir glass to take home.

The team ended with a 6-8 record in the regular season. During the first weekend of the tournament, the team defeated University of Dayton 14-7 and Tulane 13-7. The team was defeated the second weekend during the single elimination round by University of Florida 4-9.

The team, coached by Jeff Anderson ’96, Brett Cooper ’05 and Nick Palatiello ’06, had 25 alumni participants throughout the season.
